At 40 East End, frenchCALIFORNIA seamlessly blended European vintage and contemporary furniture to complement the expansive layout of the penthouse, transforming it into an inviting family home. The design ethos respects the building’s architectural integrity—drawing on Deborah Berke’s philosophy of purposeful, enriching spaces that enhance residential experiences.

HISTORIC AMBIENCE

The double living room, generously proportioned, is divided into formal and semi-formal areas. We opted for soft fabrics and a warm, neutral palette to emphasize comfort and elegance. Custom color atelier paints and limewash treatments add an old-world charm that resonates with the neighborhood’s historic ambiance.

VIBRANT SUN ROOM

Designed as a vibrant center for activity and socialization, the sun room features light, inviting colors and fabrics. A strategically positioned desk maximizes the enjoyment of the stunning cityscape and river views, making it a perfect spot for both relaxation and inspiration.

PRIVATE GARDEN IN THE SKY

The terrace, an exceptional feature of this penthouse, is designed as a private garden in the sky. It provides multiple entertainment options and offers spectacular views of the East River and the city beyond. The space is arranged to foster both grand gatherings and intimate moments under the open sky.

SOPHISTICATED, LIVED-IN FEEL

The furnishings—a curated mix of contemporary designs and vintage pieces—impart a sophisticated, lived-in feel that complements the grandeur of the rooms. The overall design draws heavily on European influences, inspired by the Upper East Side’s heritage. Artwork from NAVA Contemporary, featuring compelling contemporary artists, adds a layer of cultural richness and modern vibrancy to the space.

Our design for the penthouse at 40 East End Avenue bridges the traditional and the modern, creating a space that feels both timeless and impeccably current.
