Crescent Nob Hill

Crescent Nob Hill

SAN FRANCISCO

A two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom residence where Parisian refinement meets California ease. Set atop a Robert A.M. Stern-designed building in San Francisco, this penthouse – known as The Robert Residence – was conceived by frenchCALIFORNIA as an exercise in quiet sophistication and natural flow.

A SENSE OF PEACE

Founder and Creative Director Guillaume Coutheillas envisioned a calm, luminous home built around architectural details such as bespoke millwork and delicate crown moldings. A custom off-white tone – Crescent White, developed exclusively for residents of the building – anchors the palette and reflects soft Northern California light throughout the space.

NATURAL FLOW

The design invites movement from the formal entry to the living area and outward toward the terraces. “We wanted the flow to feel natural and open – like a Parisian home in the heart of San Francisco,” Coutheillas explains. From the lower level, the urban skyline recalls Paris; ascend the stair and glimpses of the ocean hint at the south of France.

A LAYERED, BREATHTAKING HOME

The penthouse captures an effortless Parisian aesthetic that complements the building’s art-deco inspiration – formal foyers, graceful moldings, and pre-war proportions interpreted through a modern lens. Each room balances architectural structure with warmth and comfort, combining custom pieces and vintage finds to create a collected, enduring atmosphere.

WELCOMING AND ENGAGING

Furnishings by Christophe Delcourt, B&B Italia, and CC-Tapis mix with contemporary artworks and sculptural accents to form an environment that feels both elevated and livable. Natural wood, plaster, and stone lend texture and a tactile sense of calm, while layered lighting creates softness and intimacy from day to night.

WARMTH, HAPPINESS, CALM

Throughout the residence, muted hues highlight the art-deco geometry of the architecture. Organic materials – terracotta, oak, linen, and marble – contribute to a feeling of grounded serenity.

A SOPHISTICATED POINT OF VIEW

Art plays a central role, ranging from photography and works on paper to bold abstract paintings and small-scale sculptures. Together, they express the sensibility of a well-traveled collector and reinforce the dialogue between Paris and California.

ECLECTIC EASE

In the open living and dining areas, curved lines and layered textures define each space without disrupting sightlines to the skyline beyond. Contrasting tones – light woods against dark metal accents – add rhythm and depth while maintaining an effortless sense of comfort.

PRIVATE SANCTUARY

The primary bedroom features a sculptural double headboard and a geometric stone desk oriented toward panoramic downtown views. Walls in textured jade plaster evoke the intimacy of a boutique hotel suite.

A playful second bedroom introduces color and scale through large contemporary artworks and light-toned furnishings that invite relaxation.

HAVEN FOR RESPITE

Bathrooms are wrapped in Bianco Dolomite marble, their sculpted vanities and book-matched slabs creating a luminous, spa-like retreat. Soft linens, terracotta accents, and ambient lighting complete the sense of refuge.

THE ULTIMATE CITY ESCAPE

The expansive terrace extends the home’s aesthetic outdoors with lush plantings, terracotta planters, and tailored lounge pieces, offering a quiet vantage point over the city – a Paris apartment in the sky, reimagined for San Francisco.
