Private Penthouse Residence

MIDTOWN NEW YORK

For a globe-trotting couple seeking a serene pied-à-terre in Manhattan, frenchCALIFORNIA transformed a residence in the Selene building into a harmonious blend of modern design and timeless elegance. The Selene, a 64-story tower designed by Foster + Partners, is renowned for its undulating glass façade and unparalleled city views.

A HOTEL-INSPIRED APARTMENT

Founder and creative director Guillaume Coutheillas curated an interior that complements the expansive skyline vistas. Prioritizing low-profile furniture, such as a minimalist curved sofa and a marble-topped coffee table, the design ensures unobstructed views while fostering a seamless connection between the interior and the city’s panorama.

This project exemplifies frenchCALIFORNIA’s expertise in creating refined, functional spaces that resonate with the lifestyles and tastes of their clients, all while honoring the architectural significance of the surrounding environment.

CLEAN LINES, MINIMAL CLUTTER

The open-plan living space features understated décor and carefully selected lighting fixtures, like a Michael Anastassiades-designed pendant, which adds ambiance without detracting from the dramatic cityscape. In the dining area, a sculptural Becket dining table with tubular metal legs maintains clean lines and minimal clutter, allowing the surrounding architecture to shine.

DYNAMIC LIMEWASH PAINTS

Throughout the apartment, custom limewash paints from Color Atelier add depth and texture to the walls, creating subtle shifts in tone that contribute to a dynamic atmosphere. The earthy tones provide a perfect backdrop for the curated selection of vintage and contemporary furnishings, sourced from European markets and online platforms like 1stDibs and Etsy.

CLEAN & COZY

The bedroom incorporates warmer neutrals and textures to evoke coziness while maintaining the clean, sophisticated lines seen throughout the apartment. In the spa-like bathroom, lime-washed walls contrast with polished fixtures, while a stone sink and natural wood accents ground the space in organic materials.
