Steinway Hall’s historic Landmark Penthouse houses a temporary exhibition of collectible design

New York, NY - JDS Development Group, Property Markets Group, Spruce Capital Partners, Studio Sofield, and SHoP Architects today announce the reveal of a temporary exhibition by frenchCALIFORNIA and curated by Gabriel&Guillaume inside the historic Landmark Penthouse atop Steinway Hall. The exhibition presents rare pieces of collectible design, from 1900 to 2019 mixed with works of art from leading International Galleries. Steinway Hall was originally designed by the celebrated firm of Warren & Wetmore, the firm responsible for some of Manhattan’s most refined, landmarked Beaux-Arts buildings. Steinway Hall has now been comprehensively reimaged by SHoP Architects and Studio Sofield to create a limited collection of sprawling, light-filled, pre-war residences that honor the heritage and integrity of one of Midtown’s most cherished landmarks.

The Landmark Penthouse is a 5,269 sq ft duplex residence designed for gracious living and entertaining on a grand scale. It features dramatic architectural flourishes, a spectacular great room with a vaulted ceiling, grand upper-level master suite and extensive private terraces on both floors. This three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom residence is priced at $21,000,000.

“The Landmark Penthouse at 111 West 57th Street is a beautiful combination of the historic Steinway Hall with a fresh new aesthetic,” said Amy Williamson, Director of Sales at 111 West 57th Street. “frenchCALIFORNIA and Gabriel&Guillaume did a wonderful job complementing the space with this installation, bringing in the most incredible pieces, both old and new. Guests are taken on a special journey throughout history when walking through the space.”

The exhibition is presented by architecture, design and real estate marketing company frenchCALIFORNIA and curated by Gabriel&Guillaume, a gallery for decorative arts. This is the French-Lebanese duo’s first exhibition in New York and includes a special selection of rare pieces from Brazil, France, Italy, and Lebanon. The pair stayed true to Steinway Hall’s spirit of eclecticism, showing, among other collectible items, a one-of-a-kind Gio Ponti bookcase from the late 1930s, a rare collection of pieces from Brazilian master José Zanine Caldas, an early sofa by Zaha Hadid from the late 1980s,and pieces from French star designer Garouste & Bonetti and Martin Szekely.

“At FrenchCALIFORNIA we were thrilled at the opportunity to ignite the spirit of this historic space by connecting it with the great possibilities of modern life in New York. In partnering with Gabriel&Guillaume we sought to thread incredible museum quality pieces with contemporary designs that would excite the imaginations of the most discerning buyers. We feel the result of this marriage is a landmark reborn at 111 West 57th.”

As guests walk through the duplex penthouse, they will discover other collectible pieces by Gabriella Crespi, Gino Sarfatti, Ico Parisi and Ettore Sottsass, mixed with Gabriel&Guillaume's exclusive Commissions of contemporary designs by emerging Lebanese designers Ranya Sarakbi & Niko Koronis, MariaGroup + Spock Design, and George Mohasseb. In collaboration with Gabriel&Guillaume,Valérie Cueto Art Advisory has curated a collection of paintings, photographs, and sculptures from major artists such as Hans Hartung, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Rudolf Stingel, Max Ernst, Henri Laurens, Bernar Venet, Diane Arbus or Robert Mapplethorpe with Primitive Arts.

“For our first exhibition in New York City, right after our participation at the Salon Art + Design fair, we couldn’t have dreamt of a better place than the gorgeous Landmark Penthouse, whose architecture evokes at the same time a French Hotel Particulier and a Roaring Twenties Glamorous home.

The magic of its architecture is the perfect background to mix gracefully our collection of Brazilian modernist furniture, with Italian and French mid-century modern, and unexpected 1980s masterpieces.”
